Los Altos Hills does not even have a library or a post office—mail service is provided by the nearby town of Los Altos.
Los Altos Hills maintains several open space preserves and is also home to the monastery of the Immaculate Heart of the Poor Clare Colettines, and to Foothill College. The population of the town hovers around 8,000, which makes for a population density of about 900 people per square mile. Around a third of Los Altos Hills households include children.
Elementary and middle school students frequent schools in the Los Altos School District, the Cupertino Union School District and Bullis Charter School (K-8). The Los Altos district has one of the highest API scores in California.
Los Altos Hills has strict residential zoning laws that require all lots to be at least one acre and to observe substantial setbacks from property boundaries and easements for public pathways. Property lots are allowed to contain only one primary dwelling, which prevents the development of condominiums and apartments. This guarantees a serene and somewhat rural feel to the enchanting town, which is spread over a grouping of small hills.
